Barbie Gets A New Look From Costume Designer Zerina Akers In Honor Of Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Barbie is getting a makeover from notable Costume Designer and Wardrobe Stylist Zerina Akers.

For the collaboration with toy-making retailer Mattel, Zerina Akers has curated several looks to commemorate this heritage month. Recently released pictures showcase a variance of melanated Barbie dolls rocking textured hairstyles and chic looks from sweatsuit sets to leather jackets.

In reflection of the collaboration, Akers shared via Instagram, "Barbie was one of my earliest forms of representation. It was very important to see ourselves in the toys we played with. Whether I was making clothes for my Barbie dolls or styling their hair, I was able to practice different ways to explore creatively as it related to image, appearance, and lifestyle—and I still want my Barbie Corvette!"

Akers style clients include Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé. She has been widely recognized for her work and started the platform Black Owned Everything in 2020 as a means to uplift Black-owned brands.

Her Black Barbie dolls can be found in a host of retail stories including Macy’s, Target and Walmart.
