Dressed with Honk For Jesus Costume Designer Lorraine Coppin
Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul premieres today in theaters and is streaming on Peacock.
The movie follows Trinitie Childs (Regina Hall), the First Lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch in Atlanta, as she and her husband, pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), try to bury a scandal that made them social pariahs and drove away all but five of their congregants. Throughout the film, we see the couple optimistically gearing up to stage a major comeback by reopening their church, a mission that’s pretty clearly doomed from the get-go.
As you can imagine, much of the buzz surrounding the film focuses on the costumes. Like many, including the late Andre Leon Talley, the foundations of style can be traced back to the Southern Black church. And Costume Designer Lorraine Coppin impeccably assembled glamorous looks for Pastor and First Lady that strike a fine balance of flashiness and elegance.
Full disclosure, I was Lorraine’s right-hand on this movie as Costume Supervisor and the subject of church style is near and dear to me too. As a child, I leaned from my late grandmother whose church attire or “Sunday Best” introduced me to fashion, style and decorum. I’ll be sharing my stories in a later post. Until then, check out Lorraine’s conversation with Joe Zee in the latest episode of Focus Feature Film’s Dressed. And be sure to go see Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul this weekend.
