Adella Farmar, The Costume Designer Behind ‘227’ and ‘Good Times’
In honor of the hit 1980s sitcom 227 streaming now on AmazonPrime, I’m shouting out the Costume Designer Adella Farmar, who also designed the costumes for Good Times, The Jeffersons & Gimme A Break. Ms. Farmar was also personal stylist to Esther Rolle.
Ms. Farmar attempted to join IATSE 705, but was turned away because the business was segregated at the time. It wasn’t until working with Norman Lear, the creator of Good Times, that she had the backing to join the Costumers Union. She also had the support of the actors. Marla Gibbs, Esther Rolle and Marguerite Ray modeled in a fashion show by Adella Farmar and Patricia Edwards featured in JET - October 22, 1981.
Ms. Farmar hired Michelle Cole as a Costume Buyer for Good Times. Together, they redefined 70s/80s women’s fashion, especially with characters like Thelma. Michelle Cole is now the Emmy-nominated Costume Designer behind Black-ish and Grown-ish.
Stoop styling was definitely a theme on 227. The concrete canvas was so right for bold prints and colors.
Some of my favorite looks so far are Marla Gibbs in a black jumpsuit with bold print sheer wrap + accessories. She also looked sophisticated in a long cardigan, fitted hat and wide scarf with gloves giving me hints of the Earth tone. monochromatic looks we’re seeing in fashion today. And Jackée Harry’s high class funeral look. The sleeves. The hat. The bag. Ms. Farmar’s use of accessories was perfect. Never too much, but always statement making.
