Style Notes: 2024 Oscars Red Carpet

The 96th Academy Awards went down in Los Angeles this Sunday. Historically, the Oscars is the biggest Red Carpet and the ceremony culminates Hollywood’s award season each year. As expected, it was a night of headline-making moments - from fashion, to presenting speeches, performances, winners and snubs. Here are the highlights. Plus, a gallery of the Best Dressed from the Red Carpet + Vanity Fair after-party.

1.) Cynthia Erivo nodded to her upcoming role as the next Elphaba in Broadway’s Wicked on the Oscar’s red carpet. The custom, money green Louis Vuitton leather gown is the perfect combination of fashion, storytelling and marketing. Stylist Jason Bolden did a great job with this. We definitely need a season two of Styling Hollywood on Netflix.

2. Coleman Domingo - Also wearing Louis Vuitton, his stylists Wayman & Micah are riding the western-wear wave with the perfect after-five cowboy inspiration. If you remember, they styled Coleman in a millennial pink cowboy-inspired look at the Oscar’s in 2021 so they’ve been ahead of the curve. Coleman’s style has been buzz-worthy all season long, and he’s really leading the way in celebrity male fashion for sure. He’s always well groomed and accessorized.

3.) Costume Designer Holly Paddington won for Best Costume Design for her work in Poor Things. All of the nominees gave us stunning visuals. Just take a look Holly’s work, and it speaks for itself.

4.) John Cena presented Oscar for best Costume Design nearly naked to show support for the Costume Designer’s Guild (Local 892) as it continues to promote its Pay Equity Now campaign for competitive wages and contracts. This was a perfect display of support. The actors are literally naked without costumes.

5.) Critics are shocked that Margot Robbie was free from Barbie core for the first time this awards season. But, losing will sometimes quickly make a person step out of character. I think this custom Versace gown cleanses our palette for her next role. She did it tastefully by fading to black. The sequin gives it a “lights out” effect, and the mixed metal bracelet adds suspense to what’s coming. Nicely done by her Stylist Andrew Mukamal.

6.) The Godzilla Meets One cast bonded over script-theme shoes. Again, fashion, storytelling and marketing.

7.) The costumes in Ryan Gosling’s live performance of “I’m Just Ken” referenced Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” performance. Ryan wore a custom embellished Barbie pink suit by Gucci and the background actors were modernized with cowboys in tuxedos. Shout out to the Costume Designer for this moment of sheer perfection!

8.) Ariana Grande, also channeling her new role as Glinda the Good in Wicked, looked very nice. But her candy-pink custom Giambattista Valli Haute Couture ruched column gown was not practical. One of the most important things to keep in mind when designing clothes is comfortability for the client (and everyone sitting around them in this case). Check out this picture of Ariana next to Lena Waithe. Long story short, the bustle could’ve been detachable.

Here’s a gallery of the rest of the Best Looks. The themes of Cinderella blue and classic black and white looked ravishing on everyone who wore it.

And last, but not least…the Vanity Fair after-party red carpet is the place where Stylists can be a bit more liberal as opposed to the uber formal nature of the Oscar’s. From Kelly Rowland’s fishnets to Paris Hilton’s sheer chicness, these looks were the best.
