A Recap of CFDA Awards 2022

The Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) 60th anniversary awards was a big night for some of the most successful faces in fashion. Hosted by Natasha Lyonne, the presenters, which included Martha Stewart, Kerry Washington, Bradley Cooper, Keke Palmer and Trevor Noah, were just as fashionable (and famous) as the winners.

The CFDA red carpet was one of the best I’ve seen in a while living up to the “Oscars of Fashion” title. Shout out to the folks who wore Thom Browne, a tasteful nod to the fashion designer’s new role as Chairman of the CFDA.

Best Dressed

Cher looked youthful in Chrome of Hearts. Vanessa Hudgens wore Vera Wang gracefully and really tapped into the current trend of transparency. Fashion icon Lenny Kravitz accepted his award in a custom mix of LaQuan Smith.  Others on my best dressed list include: Jaden Smith, Cassie, Olivia Culpo in an Et Ochs, KeKe Palmer in Carolina Herrera.

Luxury Law

I loved watching Kerry Washington play the role of stylist to Law Roach. Even her attire for the night - signature service black - was a tribute to the on-set vanities (wardrobe, hair, and makeup). Law, who made history as the first to win the Stylist award, also made history as the first to wear a custom menswear look by Oscar de la Rentra. Stunning! Is it just me or was Law’s look giving a tribute to the late fashion editorial icon Andre Leon Talley?

Essence published a great tribute to Law. I’d also include these looks from Celine Dion and Lewis Hamilton as some of Law’s top moments too.

Recognizing the OG

Another major highlight of the night was Jeffrey Banks receiving the Special Anniversary Award.

Jeffrey Banks mentored Ralph Lauren before launching his own menswear collection in 1977. He is the youngest designer to ever win a COTY award - one for menswear and one for mens fur. Below is a picture of Jeffrey Banks in the November 1982 issue of Essence and another of Mr. Banks celebrating his win.

Legacy Fulfilled

The late Virgil Abloh was awarded with the Board of Trustee's Award for his contributions to global fashion through Off-White, his work at Louis Vuitton and his teachings and inspiration of a generation. Well deserved.
