NAACP Image Awards Adds ‘Outstanding Costume Design” Category + Nominees
The 54th NAACP Image Awards is set to honor the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color across television, music, streaming, podcasts, literature and film, and the promotion of social justice through their creative endeavors.
This year's annual show will be the first with an in-person audience since the show was hosted in February 2020, also at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. And for the first year ever, the awards show will include three new categories within the motion picture, television + streaming categories — Outstanding Hairstyling, Outstanding Make-Up and Outstanding Costume Design.
This is phenomenal news as we believe there are so many heavy hitters working on so many large projects that the cultural contributions of Black and brown designers often get drowned out of the conversations during awards season. Luckily, NAACP is doing its part to include more creatives working behind the scenes. We’d love to see more of this, including a wider selection of nominees, in the future.
This year’s NAACP Image Awards nominees for Outstanding Costume Design include:
Francine Jamison-Tanchuck – Emancipation (Apple Studios)
Gersha Phillips, Carly Nicodemo, Heather Constable, Christina Cattle, Sheryl Willock, Becky MacKinnon – Star Trek: Discovery (Paramount+)
Gersha Phillips, Carly Nicodemo, Lieze Van Tonder, Lynn Paulsen, Tova Harrison – The Woman King (Tristar Pictures)
Ruth Carter – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Marvel Studios)
Trayce Gigi Field – A League of Their Own (Prime Video)
Winners will be revealed during the two-hour special on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8/7c on BET.
