Three Things I Learned About Whitney Houston’s Wardrobe
Whitney Houston would’ve been 59 today. Though she’s gone, she left us with enchanting melodies and iconic fashion moments (like the ones I covered in the “I’m Your Baby Tonight” video), which cemented her place as the ultimate icon in my Book of Style. To celebrate, here are three things I learned about Whitney’s wardrobe.
The first luxury designers to work with Whitney Houston were Dolce & Gabbana.
The pair created all the looks for her “My Love Is Your Love” World Tour in 1998. It included neon colors, bustiers, diamond belts and lots of texture with fur, suede and leather and layered-lengths that really played up her height. She was 5’8”. The coats were some of my absolute favorites.
Robyn Crawford shared the backstory on Whitney Houston’s 1991 National Anthem performance in her memoir.
Whitney planned to wear a black cocktail dress, but the temperature dropped in Tampa. So she was swayed to stay in the white Le Coq Sportif and NIKE Cortez. She did her own hair and make up. And in my opinion, gave the best rendition of the anthem to date. Wardrobe Stylist Ashley Sean Thomas and Brandy recently paid tribute to Whitney’s iconic performance when the singer wore a white Prada tracksuit to perform at this year’s NFL NFC Championship game. Even down to the cross earrings…Perfection!
The altered white Eugene Alexander dress that Sarah Jessica Parker wore in the opening of Sex and the City was originally designed for Whitney Houston, who wore it in a 1987 promotional photoshoot that later wound up on the cover of Life magazine. Whitney exudes music royalty and glamour. Costume Designer Patricia Fields gave us an everyday girl chic vibe for the dress still paying tribute to the best to ever do it.
