Oscars 2023 Nominations: Best in Costume Design

The Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today the 2023 nominees for the 95th Academy Awards via livestream. Oscar winner Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal,” “The Night Of”) and Allison Williams (“M3GAN,” “Get Out,” “Girls”) announced the nominees for Best in Costume Design just after the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place Sunday, March 12 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel is set to return as the host for the third time, with the telecast streaming on ABC.com, Hulu Live TV, and YouTubeTV in addition to broadcast.

A Deeper Dive

In addition to her nomination for Elvis this year, Costume Designer and Production Designer Catherine Martin has received four Academy Awards - two for costume design and production design for The Great Gatsby (2014) and two for costume and production design for Moulin Rouge! (2002). She was nominated Best in Costume Design for Australia (2009) and Romeo + Juliet (1996).

This year, Costume Designer Ruth Carter received a nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She made history as the first Black woman to win an Academy Award for her work in Black Panther (2019). Her list of nominations includes Best in Costume Design for Amistad (1998) and Malcom X (1993).

Costume Designer Mary Zophres was nominated this year for her work in Babylon. She has also received past nominations for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2019), La La Land (2017) and True Grit (2011).

Costume Designer Jenny Beavan has been a winner in the Best in Costume Design category three times for Cruella (2021), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and A Room with a View (1986). She has been nominated for eight projects including The King’s Speech (2010) , Gosford Park (2001) Anna and the King (1999), Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Remains of the Day (1993), Howards End (1992) Maurice 1986) and The Bostonians (1984). This year, she is nominated for her work in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

A newcomer to such a historical group is Costume Designer Shirley Kurata, who received her first nomination this year for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
